OpenAI has temporarily halted new subscriptions for its Pro tier, which costs $200 per month. The company implemented this measure to alleviate significant pressure on its infrastructure caused by the surge in demand for the new Astra model.
Product lead Thibaud Sottio stated that the Pro plan exerts the highest load on the system. Existing Pro subscribers will not face any changes, and the company continues to support the API along with the more affordable Go and Plus subscription tiers.
The Astra model, which launched on September 3, is currently being rolled out to Pro, Plus, Enterprise, and Business users. OpenAI describes the model as a step toward the AGI era, highlighting improvements in reasoning, programming, and computer operation tasks.
OpenAI has not provided a timeline for when Pro subscriptions will resume or disclosed specific daily user growth figures. The company is currently reallocating resources to maintain service stability and prioritize the experience of its existing user base.
