Federal prosecutors revealed that former OpenAI engineer Abdulrahman Alfozan, a Saudi Arabian national, allegedly installed a recording device in a company executive conference room. The device was discovered hidden behind a television, wrapped in tissue paper to conceal its presence.

OpenAI stated that it utilized its own models to analyze the device and its origin, which led to the identification of the employee who installed it. The FBI arrested Alfozan on October 9. He made his first court appearance on October 14, where the government officially announced the charges against him.

Court documents filed on October 8 indicate that Alfozan, along with his wife and another family member, had booked one-way tickets to Saudi Arabia departing from San Francisco on October 12, 2026. Prosecutors expressed concern that the suspect had both the means and motive to flee the country if he became aware of the investigation.

Alfozan faces a felony charge for allegedly using electronic or mechanical equipment to intercept conversations. If convicted, he faces a maximum prison sentence of 5 years.
