OpenAI CEO Sam Altman confirmed that the company will not pursue an initial public offering in 2026. Despite earlier reports suggesting a potential listing in the third or fourth quarter of 2026, the leadership team has decided to delay the process.
Altman stated that rushing into a public offering at this time would be ill-advised, citing ongoing concerns regarding AI safety and the current societal climate surrounding the technology. He emphasized that the company will only proceed when the business is fully prepared.
The decision follows reports from June indicating that OpenAI had already engaged bankers and legal counsel for a potential IPO. However, factors such as the volatility of technology stocks and internal financial challenges have influenced the shift in strategy toward 2027.
The company previously filed confidentially for an IPO. Altman noted that there is significant work to be completed before the organization is ready for the public markets, dismissing the possibility of a 2026 debut.
