OpenAI has informed its investors that its current annualized revenue is nearing $50 billion. This figure is $20 billion lower than the previous estimate of $70 billion that had been shared with stakeholders earlier.
According to the Financial Times, the initial higher projection resulted from attempts by investors to create a direct comparison between OpenAI and Anthropic. However, the companies utilize different methodologies for calculating revenue, as Anthropic includes sales generated through its cloud partners, whereas OpenAI does not.
The company faces pressure to justify significant capital inflows, having secured $122 billion in a funding round conducted in March. Financial documents from earlier this year indicated that OpenAI generated approximately $13 billion in revenue while maintaining expenditures that exceeded that amount.
In addition to financial reporting adjustments, the timeline for a potential initial public offering has shifted. While market rumors previously suggested an IPO could occur within the current year, the company has now deferred these plans until early 2027.
