The data center, owned by Athlon Blockchain LLC, utilizes containerized deployment with air-cooling and water-cooling technologies for AI storage and Bitcoin mining.
The facility had previously been issued a stop-work order in 2023 by the local government due to multiple violations of fire and life safety codes, as well as expired building and electrical permits.
Reports indicate the center may have continued construction and operations without obtaining the necessary subsequent permits, which led to a water pipe failure and the leak of 3 million gallons of water.
The leak caused the temporary closure of local schools, businesses, and city and county government offices last week. The city of El Reno has stated it will not pass the costs of the leak to residents and is pursuing legal action to recover all related expenses from the owner.
