A new monitoring method for smart home systems uses an Android smartphone as an independent notification device. The system relies on Termux and the Termux:API extension to interface with mobile network functions, enabling SMS alerts and voice calls when internet connectivity is lost.

The monitoring script performs checks every 30 seconds, targeting the smart home server, router, internet connection, and specific web services like MajorDoMo (port 80) and Zigbee2MQTT (port 8080). It uses ping for network availability and curl for HTTP status verification.

The system implements an escalation algorithm for detected issues. After two consecutive errors (approximately one minute), it sends the first SMS. A second SMS follows after four errors (two minutes), and a voice call is triggered after six errors (three minutes).

To prevent notification spam, the script resets local web service error counters if the main server is unreachable. Recovery notifications are sent via SMS only if at least one alert was previously triggered for the specific incident.
