IT solutions provider Obit has introduced a new data backup framework called 12-3-1-0. This model builds upon the traditional 3-2-1 backup strategy, which requires three data copies, two storage media types, and one off-site copy, by adding specific requirements for regular testing and infrastructure verification.

The 12-3-1-0 formula includes four core control levels. It mandates monthly data recovery tests, three annual checks for off-site media restoration, one full annual infrastructure recovery test, and zero uncontrolled system changes. The latter involves regular audits of backup plans and tools to ensure they remain relevant to current infrastructure and risks.

According to Kirill Timofeev, head of the IT department at Obit, simply creating a backup does not guarantee data availability during a crisis. The company emphasizes that organizations must verify the ability to restore applications and services within established RTO and RPO timeframes to ensure business continuity.

Obit recommends that companies start by analyzing the criticality of their information systems and potential failure scenarios. When using external storage, the company advises implementing versioning, object locking, and multi-factor authentication. Specialists also suggest checking compatibility when updating hardware or software.
