A modder has developed a closed-source project called DLSS-NR-on-AMD, which allows Nvidia's DLSS 5 to run on AMD RDNA 4 GPUs. The tool uses a dynamic wrapper to intercept NGX API calls and converts AI model calculations into a format compatible with AMD's matrix accelerators via the HIP RT backend.

The mod currently supports the RX 9070 XT, the top-end RDNA 4 GPU. In Cyberpunk 2077 at 1080p, the frame rate improved from 28 FPS to 30 FPS after a patch and a subsequent 2% boost. The ultimate goal is to reach performance levels comparable to the RTX 5070 Ti.

The mod requires users to provide their own DLSS 5 DLL, which was originally leaked from NBA 2K27, the only game currently supporting the technology natively. The tool integrates with the game's FSR pipeline and allows real-time parameter adjustments through a custom menu activated by the End key.

While the RX 9000 series and RTX 50-series both support FP8 formats, DLSS 5 is designed for Tensor cores. The mod has been tested on RX 7000 series GPUs, but performance is poor due to the lack of FP8 support. Support for RDNA 3 is being explored but is not currently planned.
