Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang stated that the company might stop supplying chips to customers developing unsafe AI software. During an interview on October 14, 2026, Huang clarified that any decision to halt shipments would be hypothetical and conditional, occurring only after direct consultations with the client.
Nvidia currently controls approximately 90% of the market for AI training chips. The company has a history of screening buyers, with previous vetting processes resulting in the disqualification of more than 50% of prospective customers in certain regions.
Alongside these comments, Nvidia announced a financial commitment of $250 million to be distributed over five years. The funds will support AI safety research at UK institutions, including the University of Oxford and University College London, focusing on containment and monitoring tools.
Huang emphasized that the industry should prioritize the development of safety technology rather than slowing down AI progress. He described current concerns regarding AI risks as manageable growing pains within an expanding sector.
