NTT Docomo has begun upgrading mobile network infrastructure at the JR Nagoya Station in Aichi Prefecture. The company has already completed the installation of new base stations on the Shinkansen platforms and is currently working on the remaining conventional railway platforms.
The initiative follows reports of poor signal coverage and slow data speeds at the station. Measurements taken in May 2023 showed that download speeds on some conventional platforms dropped below 1 Mbps, which hindered basic smartphone usage like web browsing and video streaming.
To accelerate the project, NTT Docomo decided to build the infrastructure independently rather than pursuing a shared network model. The operator worked closely with JR Central to optimize signal coverage and prevent radio interference, ensuring more stable connectivity for commuters.
Looking ahead, the operator plans to continue monitoring traffic and communication demands in the area. The company expects further growth in network usage due to ongoing urban redevelopment projects and the future launch of the Chuo Shinkansen maglev line.
