National Pension Service (NPS) of South Korea has appointed Kyuhong Lee as its new Chief Investment Officer. He officially assumes his duties on September 15, 2026, taking responsibility for a portfolio valued at approximately ₩1,866 trillion, or $1.4 trillion.
Lee brings extensive experience in institutional asset management. He previously served as CIO of the Teachers’ Pension from 2019 to 2023 and held the same position at NH-Amundi Asset Management between 2013 and 2018. His career also includes leadership roles at Ascendas Asset Management Korea and Eastspring Investments Korea.
The recruitment process for the position began on June 11, 2026, following the departure of the previous CIO, Seo Won-ju, at the end of 2025. The selection involved recommendations from a specialized committee, approval from the NPS chairman, and final sign-off from the Minister of Health and Welfare.
The appointment is set for a two-year term ending on September 14, 2028, with options for annual renewals based on performance. Despite the leadership change, there are no indications that the fund plans to invest in digital assets or blockchain technology, maintaining its traditional investment mandate.
