A new facility for the production of multi-walled carbon nanotubes has been launched in Novosibirsk. The project is a collaboration between the NTI Competence Center, founded by the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the NTI Platform, and the Boreskov Institute of Catalysis of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
The NTI fund invested 680 ₽ million over three years into research, development, and equipment procurement for this initiative. While current domestic production is limited to several dozen kilograms, the annual market demand is estimated at one to two tons per month, with a total market value of 50 ₽ million.
Multi-walled nanotubes are primarily imported from China and other countries, with annual volumes reaching several tons. These materials are essential for manufacturing lithium-ion batteries, conductive polymers, rubber products, and fire-resistant coatings, the latter of which are used to protect facilities from drone attacks.
The nanotubes are produced from carbon-containing gas using catalysts. The technology for single-walled nanotubes was originally developed by Russian scientists in 2010. In 2026, intellectual property rights previously held by the Luxembourg-based company OCSiAL were transferred to Russian entities under the management of a Rosnano subsidiary.
