The Norwegian government plans to introduce a bill to parliament proposing a temporary ban on the use of AI glasses in public spaces. The restrictions would specifically target areas such as schools, kindergartens, parks, and beaches to prevent unauthorized recording.
Digitalisation Minister Torgeir Micaelsen stated that the measure aims to provide time for a comprehensive assessment of the technology. The government intends to establish an expert group to draft permanent national regulations regarding the use of wearable devices.
Several organizations in Norway have already implemented internal prohibitions. Schools in Oslo and the energy company Equinor have banned the use of smart glasses within their offices and offshore facilities to protect privacy.
Global authorities are currently evaluating the regulation of AI glasses, including devices from Meta and other manufacturers. Australia is considering similar restrictions in public areas, while courtrooms in various countries have already enforced bans on wearable technology.
