Noctua has announced a partnership with Forced Physics to explore the implementation of JouleForce technology in desktop PCs. This cooling method utilizes densely packed micro-channels to dissipate over 2000W of thermal energy. By preventing the formation of boundary layers, the system aims to extract heat along the entire length of the channels using only air.
The primary technical hurdle involves the high pressure required to push air through the micro-channel arrays. Current implementations demand pressure levels significantly higher than those provided by standard PC fans, necessitating the use of industrial blowers or vacuum pumps. The current setup is unsuitable for consumer use due to its size and noise levels.
Noctua intends to leverage its expertise in fan engineering to address these airflow and acoustic challenges. CEO Roland Mossig described the project as a demanding, long-term engineering task. The companies are currently in the early research phase and plan to provide updates as they reach significant development milestones.
