Noctua has entered into a research partnership with Forced Physics DCT to adapt the JouleForce microchannel air cooling technology for desktop PCs and workstations. This method replaces traditional aluminum fin arrays with heat exchangers containing thousands of microscopic air channels.
The JouleForce technology was originally designed for data centers and AI accelerators. In industrial applications, it is capable of dissipating over 2000 W of heat without the use of liquid cooling systems. The design reduces the impact of the air boundary layer, allowing for more efficient heat transfer within a smaller footprint.
The primary engineering challenge involves the high static pressure required to force air through narrow channels. Industrial versions currently rely on loud centrifugal blowers, which are unsuitable for consumer environments. Noctua aims to leverage its expertise in fan development to create a quiet, compact solution for standard computing hardware.
If the project succeeds, it could lead to the development of new air coolers capable of managing extreme thermal loads without pumps, tubes, or liquid loops.
