Nippon Ichi Software CEO Koichi Kitakado expressed concerns regarding Sony's reported plans to discontinue physical game discs for PlayStation by 2028. The developer remains optimistic that a compromise can be reached to allow the continued sale of limited physical editions.
The company emphasizes that high-quality physical releases, which often include merchandise alongside the game, are a vital component of its business model. Kitakado confirmed that Nippon Ichi has already initiated discussions with Sony representatives to address the future of physical media.
One potential alternative discussed is the use of boxed codes, though the CEO noted this is not the only option under consideration. The developer previously experimented with key cards for the Nintendo Switch 2, but the format faced significant backlash from the player community.
While the company intends to maintain its focus on physical products, the long-term strategy remains uncertain. Kitakado stated that he lacks insider information beyond what is publicly known and is currently waiting to see how the industry landscape evolves regarding physical distribution.
