Nintendo has identified a security vulnerability in the original Nintendo Switch console related to QR code functionality. The flaw could allow unauthorized parties to access console information or execute malicious code if they gain access to the QR codes displayed on the screen.
The issue affects two specific scenarios: transferring content from the album to a smartphone and using the kart in Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit. Both features display QR codes on the console or television screen. Nintendo confirmed that the vulnerability requires an attacker to directly read these codes.
To mitigate the risk, Nintendo advises users to update their systems to version 23.0.0. The company clarified that the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 model is not affected by this specific security flaw. Users can check their current firmware version and initiate updates via the settings menu.
For those unable to update immediately, the company recommends ensuring that QR codes are not visible to third parties during use. Additionally, users should avoid connecting their consoles to any devices other than their own smartphones or official racing karts to prevent potential exploitation.
