The Nikon ZR is the company's first camera developed in collaboration with RED Digital Cinema, designed as a hybrid tool for both video and photography. It features a 24.5-megapixel full-frame partially stacked CMOS sensor and an EXPEED 7 processor, similar to the Z6 III model.

The device supports the R3D NE 12-bit RAW format, utilizing RED's Log3G10 curves and RedWideGamutRGB color space. It offers a dynamic range exceeding 15 stops and dual base ISO settings of 800 and 6400 for video recording.

The camera design prioritizes compactness by omitting a viewfinder and mechanical shutter. It includes a 4-inch articulating touchscreen with 1280 x 800 resolution and 1000 cd/m2 brightness, supporting the DCI-P3 color gamut.

Storage is handled by two slots located in the battery compartment: one for CFexpress Type B and one for microSD cards. The device features Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.3 connectivity, with support for Frame.io Camera to Cloud via the NX MobileAir application.

Power is supplied by an EN-EL15c battery, with USB Type-C Power Delivery support for external power. The camera is rated for up to 125 minutes of continuous 6K video recording when using external power.
