Nextcloud is developing a dedicated desktop client for the Euro-Office productivity suite to enhance its market competitiveness. This initiative aims to address the lack of native desktop functionality that has persisted since the suite's initial release.

Euro-Office is an open-source project developed by a coalition of European organizations, including Nextcloud, Ionos, Open-Xchange, and Office.eu. The suite serves as an alternative to Microsoft Office, focusing on data sovereignty to reduce reliance on non-European software providers.

The upcoming desktop application will be introduced as part of the Nextcloud Hub 26 Summer version. It is designed to support Windows 11 and Linux operating systems, with compatibility for both AMD64 and Arm64 processor architectures, as well as 64-bit macOS systems.

Previously, Euro-Office functioned primarily through web browsers. By integrating the suite with Collabora within Nextcloud Office, users could edit documents directly on servers. The new desktop client aims to bridge the experience gap with Microsoft Office by providing offline editing and improved cloud synchronization.
