The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey launched a $45 million initiative to accelerate the adoption of electric trucks and charging infrastructure. The program is developed in partnership with the clean transport organization CALSTART.

The initiative includes two main components: the Clean Truck Incentive (CTI) Program, which provides up to $39 million in point-of-sale vouchers for vehicle and charger purchases, and the Green Drayage Accelerator (GDA), which allocates $5 million to support up to five charging hubs within a 10-mile radius of the port.

These programs are part of a broader commitment to reach net-zero emissions by 2050. CALSTART will manage the administration and develop tracking dashboards to monitor vehicle performance and charger utilization, with full management transferring to the Port Authority by 2028.

The funding for these schemes originates from a $451 million grant provided by the EPA Clean Ports Program. This grant also supports the installation of electric cargo handling equipment and vessel shore power infrastructure, allowing container ships to shut down auxiliary engines while docked.

Recent electrification efforts at the port also include an order by APM Terminals for 96 electric yard trucks from Orange EV and 34 electric gantry cranes from Konecranes.
