Developers at the Ecash Hackday in Berlin successfully launched a Fedimint federation operating across three independent software implementations. This milestone addresses concerns regarding software monoculture, where reliance on a single codebase creates shared vulnerabilities.
The Fedimint team collaborated with external developers, including the creator of Cashu, to demonstrate that different codebases can manage funds within a single federation. The project is now seeking a fourth independent implementation to further increase system resilience.
Separately, developer Calle introduced Federated Cashu at the Bitcoin++ conference. This system utilizes a new blind BLS signature scheme, allowing any four out of five operators to maintain the federation, thereby removing reliance on a single operator for security.
These initiatives aim to establish independent failure domains, ensuring that no single bug, vendor, or jurisdiction can compromise the entire system. The goal is to move beyond simple trust models toward a structure where multiple layers of independence protect user funds.
