Following the September 24 breach of the Bitget exchange, the NEAR Intents protocol utilized its SHIELD risk-intelligence layer to intercept funds. The system successfully blocked over $50 million in assets that hackers attempted to launder through the platform.
Data shows that only about $166 000 of the flagged funds passed through the system, which accounts for approximately 0.3% of the total intercepted volume. Additionally, the protocol managed to freeze $503 000 mid-execution during cross-chain swaps.
NEAR Intents, which typically processes over $100 million in daily volume, opted to waive its standard 5% bounty for the recovery of these assets. Bitget CEO Gracy Chen publicly acknowledged the role of the protocol in hindering the laundering process.
The SHIELD system operates by aggregating signals from compliance providers to identify suspicious patterns or sanctioned wallets. The protocol redirected most illicit flows to prevent stolen assets from entering circulation via its infrastructure.
