NASA has launched the second season of its ORBIT student challenge, aimed at fostering innovation in Earth technology and deep-space exploration. University and college students can register for the 2026–2027 program via the NASA STEM Gateway until November 16, 2026.

The competition features a total prize pool of up to $500,000. Participants must conduct research, build conceptual models, and perform feasibility analyses. Finalists will present their projects at an in-person Pitch Showcase to a panel of expert judges.

The program offers two primary tracks. The Earth track requires teams to utilize NASA-owned patents to solve terrestrial problems, while the Space track focuses on technologies supporting the Artemis program and long-term human presence on the Moon and Mars.

This season introduces new recognitions, including the Faculty Advisors’ Choice Award and the Next Steps Award for project continuity. Teams may also qualify for an Integration Bonus if their work successfully bridges the goals of both the Earth and Space tracks.
