Elon Musk plans to launch mass production of semiconductors at the Terafab facility in the third quarter of 2028, though a delay to the fourth quarter remains possible. The project aims to provide SpaceX and Tesla with internal chip manufacturing capabilities.
The initial functional test chip is scheduled for production in May or June 2027 at a research facility in Austin, located near the Giga Texas plant. The team selected an SRAM-based chip for this stage to validate the production chain before scaling up.
Regarding EUV equipment from ASML, Musk did not confirm specific orders but acknowledged the support of suppliers in accelerating equipment deliveries. The company is actively seeking equipment and material suppliers in South Korea.
Tesla and SpaceX are reportedly avoiding Chinese suppliers for their chip production needs. The companies are aiming to secure procurement costs that are even lower than those currently available in the Chinese market.
