Elon Musk recently commented on China's manufacturing capabilities via the X platform. He stated that once Chinese companies master a specific production process, their ability to scale output frequently surpasses the combined capacity of the rest of the world. Musk cited the solar and lithium battery industries as primary examples of this trend.
The discussion was prompted by an analysis of ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT), which is emerging as a competitor to major players like Micron, Samsung, and SK Hynix. According to TrendForce, CXMT currently holds a 9.5% share of the global DRAM market, up from 7.6% in the previous quarter, establishing it as the world's fourth-largest DRAM manufacturer.
Analysts note that while CXMT has made progress with 4F squared DRAM technology, the company still needs to prove its competitiveness in terms of yield, pricing, reliability, and volume. This technology is currently focused on traditional DDR5 server memory rather than High Bandwidth Memory (HBM).
Musk highlighted SpaceX as a rare exception, noting that its orbital payload mass is approximately 10 times that of the rest of the world combined. However, he acknowledged that China's current total orbital payload mass has now exceeded that of all other countries and regions combined, excluding SpaceX.
The memory sector is evolving, as it has shifted from a low-margin commodity three years ago to one of the fastest-appreciating products today. Experts suggest that China is rapidly advancing in this field, though new architectures like HBM, 3D memory stacking, and logic circuit cooling present significant technical hurdles.
