Murata Manufacturing has officially launched a new 3-terminal multilayer ceramic capacitor, which the company claims is the smallest of its kind in the world. The component measures 0.6mm by 0.3mm, adhering to the 0201 size standard.
The new design features three external terminals, which create shorter and more distributed current paths compared to traditional 2-terminal structures. This configuration is intended for placement near IC power terminals to manage instantaneous current supply and suppress voltage fluctuations.
By transitioning from the previous 0402 size, which measured 1.0mm by 0.5mm, the new capacitor reduces the mounting area on printed circuit boards by approximately 64 percent. This space-saving design aims to improve layout flexibility for high-density applications.
The component is designed to maintain stable power supply voltage for integrated circuits even under high-frequency operating conditions. Murata expects the product to support performance enhancements in compact electronics, including smartphones and smartwatches.
