Muneeb Ali, co-founder of the Stacks protocol, has been appointed CEO of Stacks Labs. He succeeds Alex Miller, who managed the organization during its formation and initial operational phase.
Stacks Labs was established in 2025 following the approval of the SIP-031 governance proposal. The organization currently employs approximately 33 people globally and focuses on protocol development and ecosystem growth.
In July 2026, the Stacks community voted with roughly 99% support in favor of implementing staking upgrades. This consensus reflects a shared technical direction for the ecosystem.
The company plans to launch a product called the genesis bond in 2026. This offering is linked to self-custodial Bitcoin yield and aims to demonstrate the utility of sBTC, a decentralized asset pegged to Bitcoin for DeFi activities.
The Stacks protocol, originally launched as Blockstack in 2013 and rebranded in 2020, utilizes the Proof of Transfer consensus mechanism. It uses the Clarity programming language for smart contracts.
