Investors anticipate that the Federal Reserve will maintain current interest rates during the upcoming Wednesday meeting. Michael Gapen, chief US economist at Morgan Stanley, suggests that this pause will not mark the end of the tightening cycle, as the central bank is expected to signal further increases.
The market reaction, particularly for assets like Bitcoin, will likely depend on the tone of the official statement rather than the rate decision itself. Gapen notes that the committee may justify the pause by citing a need to evaluate underlying economic trends before proceeding with additional hikes.
A key indicator of the Fed's stance will be the number of dissenting votes. While three officials supported a hike during the July pause, Gapen expects two dissents this time. A higher number of dissenting votes would be interpreted as a hawkish signal, indicating a stronger inclination toward future rate increases.
Economic conditions remain complex, with rising energy costs and geopolitical tensions in the Middle East exerting pressure on oil and diesel markets. Gapen suggests that the US economy can withstand total rate increases of 75 to 100 basis points, though a return to 2023 levels would create a significantly different economic environment.
