A new mod allows users to enable Multi Frame Generation (MFG) on Nvidia RTX 40-series graphics cards, a feature officially exclusive to the RTX 50-series. Testing in Cyberpunk 2077 confirms that the mod successfully increases motion fluidity, though it introduces visual artifacts at the bottom of the frame when using 4X multipliers.
Performance tests were conducted on RTX 40-series cards ranging from the RTX 4070 to the RTX 4090. While the mod enables higher frame rates, input latency remains a critical factor. The team established a 60ms average latency threshold for a playable experience in AAA titles.
At 1080p and 1440p resolutions, most RTX 40-series cards maintain acceptable latency with MFG 4X enabled. However, combining the mod with DLSS 5 significantly increases latency, making it difficult for lower-tier cards to stay within the 60ms limit. Blackwell architecture cards consistently show lower input latency compared to Ada Lovelace counterparts.
The testing revealed an unusual latency spike at 1440p resolution on RTX 40-series cards, which does not occur on RTX 50-series hardware. Additionally, a newer version of the mod that removes the need for ReShade currently causes game crashes, highlighting the experimental nature of these unofficial tools.
Despite these limitations, the mod demonstrates that RTX 40-series hardware is capable of running MFG. The findings suggest that the feature's exclusivity to the RTX 50-series may be a marketing decision rather than a technical necessity, potentially extending the lifespan of older graphics cards.
