An enthusiast identified as PREMO successfully removed the power limit on a mobile Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090 GPU. By utilizing AI-assisted coding tools, the modification allowed the graphics card to consume 250 W of power, significantly exceeding the factory-set limit of 175 W.
The modified GPU was tested by the YouTube channel GizmoSlipTech using an XMG Neo 16 (2025) gaming laptop. To manage the increased thermal output of the 250 W configuration, the team employed an external XMG Oasis liquid cooling system.
Performance benchmarks showed a 41.6% increase in the 3DMark Steel Nomad test compared to the standard 175 W setting. Gaming performance also saw notable gains, with Black Myth: Wukong showing a 23.33% improvement, Cyberpunk 2077 rising by 23.89%, and The Witcher 3 gaining nearly 30%.
Despite the performance boost, experts warn that operating the RTX 5090 at 250 W poses significant risks to hardware longevity. Components such as the VRM, power lines, and the power supply unit are not designed for such loads, which could lead to overheating or permanent hardware failure.
