Reports recently circulated regarding a new one-trillion-parameter model from Mistral AI, dubbed ML4 or Le Chonk, with a rumored release date of October 27. However, the company has not confirmed these claims. CEO Arthur Mensch indicated that the specifications associated with this model are based on a community meme titled Le Chaton Fat, which emerged in June 2026 as a joke.
Mistral AI has not released any general-purpose model at the one-trillion-parameter scale. Instead, the company recently launched Mistral Small 4, which features 119 billion total parameters and 6.5 billion active parameters. This model supports a 256k context window, offers multimodal capabilities, and is distributed under the Apache 2.0 license.
Additionally, the company introduced Leanstral 1.5, a model designed for formal verification of reasoning and code. These developments follow a significant financial milestone in September 2026, when Mistral secured €3 billion in a Series D funding round. This investment, led by Samsung with support from a16z and Nvidia, brought the company valuation to over €21 billion.
