Microsoft has launched the Surface Laptop Ultra, a high-end device featuring the new Nvidia RTX Spark Arm-based chip. The laptop is designed to compete directly with the MacBook Pro, targeting creative professionals and developers who require local AI compute power. It supports local execution of 280 billion-parameter AI models.
The device features a CNC-machined aluminum chassis, a large trackpad, and a high-resolution touchscreen. Pricing starts at $2,599.99 for the 24GB RAM configuration, reaching $5,899.99 for the 128GB model. The system utilizes unified memory architecture to handle intensive creative tasks in applications like Photoshop and Premiere.
A key engineering feature is the proprietary magnetic USB-C charging solution, which maintains universal port compatibility. The design team underwent approximately 300 iterations to develop this connector. The laptop is also engineered for repairability, avoiding the use of adhesives for internal components.
Microsoft employs an Automated Experience Lab to stress-test hardware. This includes the use of specialized robots that simulate user interactions, such as opening lids or operating touchscreens, allowing Nvidia engineers to remotely test code stability. These automated processes have significantly accelerated the development cycle.
