Microsoft has officially begun removing the Publisher desktop publishing software from user computers as part of its Microsoft 365 product line streamlining. The application, which debuted in 1991, reached its official end-of-support date in October 2026. Recent updates to Office have caused the software to disappear from application lists for many subscribers.

The retirement of Publisher creates compatibility issues for the proprietary PUB file format. Microsoft confirmed that standard Office applications like Word and PowerPoint do not natively support PUB files. Users are advised to convert existing documents into PDF, Word, or PowerPoint formats to ensure long-term accessibility, though the company warns that complex layouts may shift during conversion.

While the software is being phased out for Microsoft 365 users, those with perpetual licenses can continue to run locally installed versions for now. However, Microsoft notes that future Windows and Office updates will likely reduce compatibility over time. The company is shifting its focus toward web-based design tools, collaborative platforms, and AI-driven services to replace the functionality previously covered by Publisher.
