Microsoft has released the KB5127648 cumulative update for Windows 11 versions 24H2, 25H2, and 26H2. This patch addresses a critical issue involving the AC-3 audio decoder that previously caused application crashes.

The technical problem stemmed from a conflict in the msmpeg2ac3dec.dll component. Users reported that the system would crash when playing multiple MP3 files simultaneously, adjusting volume, or launching older games and media players that rely on the built-in Dolby decoder.

The issue was initially acknowledged by Microsoft on October 4, following reports that the KB5124010 optional update released in September 2026 introduced the bug. Prior to the fix, users were forced to uninstall the update to maintain system stability.

To resolve the issue, users should navigate to the Windows Update section within system settings and install the latest cumulative update. A system restart is required to finalize the installation and restore proper audio decoding functionality.
