Microsoft has acknowledged a technical issue affecting Word version 2609, specifically build 16.0.20430.x. Users report that attempting to save documents as PDF files directly to SharePoint Online locations results in errors. The system fails to retain the original file name, assigning a random string instead, and incorrectly routes the file to the local directory C:\Users\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\INetCache\Content.MSO.
The company began receiving user reports regarding this malfunction in early September. To mitigate the issue, Microsoft suggests two temporary workarounds. Users can utilize the print-to-PDF function, which remains unaffected by the bug. Alternatively, the company advises rolling back the Microsoft 365 installation to version 2608, build 20326.20072, to restore standard functionality while the developers address the error.
