Microsoft has introduced a redesigned Windows Search experience for Windows 11, now available to Windows Insider members in the Experimental channel. The update, built on WinUI 3, aims to improve startup speed, response latency, and memory usage.

The interface has been simplified by removing the traditional dual-pane layout in favor of a single scrollable list. Microsoft reports that the previous right-hand preview pane saw minimal usage, and the new design focuses on displaying files, apps, and settings more efficiently.

A key feature is the introduction of inline actions, allowing users to perform system tasks directly from the search box. Supported commands include toggling dark mode, adjusting screen brightness, managing Bluetooth, and window arrangement.

The search algorithm has been updated to better handle spelling errors and synonyms. Additionally, the search tool now provides built-in web previews for weather, stock prices, and landmark information, as well as integration with Phone Link for sending text messages.

Microsoft plans to add inline previews for PowerPoint, Word documents, and photo thumbnails later this year. The current update is limited to English-language users on build versions 26340.9616 or 28120.3181, requiring a manual check in Windows Update.
