At a Windows and Surface event held in San Francisco on October 7, 2026, Microsoft announced plans to transform Windows 11 into an agentic operating system. The platform will utilize hybrid intelligence to route AI tasks between local device models and cloud-based processing, aiming to reduce reliance on data centers.
The company introduced the MAI Code 1.1 Flash model as a key example of local AI efficiency. This model has been reduced to approximately 80% of its original size, featuring 137 billion total parameters with 6.8 billion active parameters, allowing for high performance with lower computational demands.
Microsoft has officially released Microsoft Execution Containers (MXC) for Windows 11. This feature enables users to run applications within secure sandboxes, providing IT departments with tools to manage autonomous agents while maintaining security and limiting potential operational risks.
New capabilities for Copilot include local context access and permission-based actions. GitHub Copilot is also receiving updates for Copilot+ PCs, with experimental features scheduled for release in October. These tools are designed to demonstrate Windows as a secure runtime for autonomous agents.
During the event, Microsoft unveiled the Surface Laptop Ultra and additional hardware powered by NVIDIA RTX Spark processors. Pre-orders for these new devices are currently available to customers.
