Microsoft has officially confirmed that the Internet Explorer mode within the Edge browser will remain supported until at least the end of 2029. This update, documented in the Microsoft 365 admin center under ID MC1473151, applies to global, GCC, GCC High, and DoD cloud environments.
The IE mode allows organizations to run legacy applications built for the Trident engine that are incompatible with the modern Chromium core. Microsoft stated that no immediate action is required from administrators or users, though organizations still relying on this feature are encouraged to begin planning for modern alternatives.
The company recommends that businesses audit their current dependencies and evaluate modernization strategies, such as updating, replacing, or rebuilding legacy applications. Microsoft offers free assistance through its App Assure program for eligible customers facing compatibility issues with Edge and IE mode.
To ensure a smooth transition, Microsoft has committed to providing at least one year of advance notice before the final retirement of IE mode. The company noted that the availability of AI-powered coding tools should help organizations accelerate the process of updating their legacy software.
