Microsoft has updated the cloud recovery feature in the latest Windows 11 test build. This tool allows users to reinstall the operating system by downloading the latest installation image directly from Microsoft servers via the WinRE recovery environment, eliminating the need for external USB drives or BIOS configuration.
The updated recovery interface now includes two distinct data management options. The first option, designed for users who intend to keep using the device, performs a quick format of the system drive to remove existing files. This process does not support data backup, so users must secure important information beforehand.
For those planning to sell or transfer their PC, Microsoft introduced a secure wipe option. This feature utilizes hardware-level erasure capabilities to permanently delete data from the drive before the reinstallation process begins, making it difficult to recover information even with specialized software tools.
The company continues to recommend that users maintain a bootable USB drive, such as a 4GB or 16GB unit with a PE environment, to handle potential system failures. This provides an additional layer of security for data backup and manual system restoration if the cloud-based recovery environment is inaccessible.
