Microsoft released a set of new tools and features for Edge browser developers on September 21. These updates aim to improve the performance of web applications and expand the capabilities of AI agents within the browser environment.

The company introduced new performance metrics, including soft navigation and interaction content painting. These tools allow developers to identify bottlenecks in single-page applications, reducing issues such as frame drops, white screens, and unresponsive interfaces during user interactions.

New JavaScript self-analysis markers help developers debug style calculations, layout, painting, and garbage collection processes. These improvements enable faster identification of performance issues, allowing for quicker deployment of optimized web versions.

Microsoft is promoting the WebMCP API to expose frontend capabilities as structured tools for AI agents. This integration allows agents to perform complex tasks like information retrieval, form filling, and option comparison directly within the browser.

The update also includes the OpaqueRange API to improve text input experiences. This feature ensures that spell checks, suggestions, and prompt bubbles remain correctly positioned relative to the text, even when users add or delete content in forms or documents.
