Microsoft is set to release version 157 of its Edge browser this November. The update marks a shift in the authentication architecture, as the company plans to discontinue support for the legacy Windows Web Account Manager, known as WAM.
Following the update, the browser will transition to the OneAuth authentication library. This change will disable the fallback path for the legacy WAM by default in all scenarios, which may impact user profiles that have not yet completed the migration process.
Organizations that have previously disabled OneAuth WAM via specific parameters will also be affected by this transition. Microsoft notes that in rare instances, users might be prompted to sign back into their Edge browser after the update is applied.
The primary objective of this change is to standardize the authentication process across all Microsoft 365 applications. The company claims this shift will provide more robust diagnostic capabilities and improved recovery mechanisms for users.
IT administrators are advised to notify their support teams about the upcoming changes. After the upgrade to version 157, some users may see a prompt in the profile menu requesting them to re-authenticate their accounts.
