Microsoft is currently testing a new mechanism for the Edge browser that allows updates to be applied without requiring a restart. This approach aims to ensure that users can install critical security patches without interrupting their active workflow or losing open tabs.

During a demonstration, the browser successfully switched to a new version after the user clicked the update button, while maintaining the state of existing tabs. The company notes that this seamless transition is currently limited to tabs that are compatible with the updated version.

The project is currently in the prototype stage and is not yet integrated into the Edge browser or the Chromium project. Microsoft has chosen to share this concept publicly to encourage collaboration and feedback from the broader developer community.
