Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has repeatedly characterized Copilot as a new operating system for work. This definition was reiterated on September 26, October 1, and October 3, with Nadella emphasizing that the application is designed to support all models, work scenarios, and tasks.
Technical analysis reveals that the Copilot desktop application is primarily a web-based tool. The main executable, copilotapp.exe, is 4.99 MB and functions as a renamed Microsoft Edge launcher. The installation directory contains a full Edge 154 build, totaling approximately 520 MB, including the browser core and Chromium components.
When active, the application loads specific web addresses for personal or work accounts using the Chromium renderer. It also utilizes a WinUI 3 host program, copilotapphost.exe, built with .NET 10 and NativeAOT. This component manages system-level features like voice wake-up, screen sharing, and floating overlays.
