Microsoft has unveiled the development process of the Surface Laptop Ultra, highlighting a design cycle that involved over 300 iterations. The company aimed to create a competitive alternative to the MacBook Pro by focusing on hardware refinement and user experience.
The standout feature of the new laptop is the integration of a magnetic USB-C charging port, branded as Magnetic Connect. According to lead designer Jit Hirani, the engineering team prioritized maintaining the universal USB-C standard while incorporating magnetic functionality.
The new port functions similarly to the original Surface Connect, featuring a charging indicator and requiring no precise alignment during connection. Users can detach the cable from a 140-watt charger and use the standard USB-C end to power other devices, offering flexibility in daily use.
Microsoft spent several years developing this proprietary magnetic solution. While the company has not confirmed which future models will feature this technology, representatives indicated that the team is committed to the innovation and intends to showcase it globally.
