Microsoft is updating its Microsoft 365 subscription model, introducing shared storage for Family and Premium plans. While family members will gain access to Copilot features, the total OneDrive storage capacity will be reduced from a maximum of 6TB to a shared 2TB pool. Previously, six users could each access 1TB independently.
The company claims this shift offers greater flexibility, allowing users to utilize the shared pool dynamically. However, many subscribers argue that the reduction in total capacity is significant. The change has sparked backlash, with users on platforms like Reddit organizing a protest by disabling automatic subscription renewals.
Participants in the protest are encouraged to cite the storage reduction as their reason for canceling auto-renewal. This strategy aims to signal potential churn to Microsoft. While new subscribers are already under the new terms, existing users will transition to the 2TB shared pool upon their first renewal after May 2, 2027.
Some users have already disabled their auto-renewal settings, while others remain in a wait-and-see mode, hoping for policy adjustments or compensation. Microsoft has until the 2027 deadline to evaluate market feedback and decide whether to modify the implementation of the new storage policy.
