Metaplanet, a Tokyo-based company, has updated its corporate strategy to allow up to 15% of its assets to be allocated to investments outside of Bitcoin. Previously, the firm focused almost exclusively on accumulating the cryptocurrency, which it began in April 2024. The company currently holds 44,000 BTC, valued at approximately $3.8 billion based on a price of $86,070 per coin.
The newly allocated 15% of assets will be used for three primary purposes: funding corporate acquisitions, purchasing income-generating securities, and seeding a new investment business. As part of its expansion, Metaplanet reached an agreement in August to acquire Super League Enterprise, a Nasdaq-listed media company, for 2,100 BTC and $2.5 million. The company plans to rename the entity Superplanet.
The firm is also implementing a Net Interest Income Strategy, which involves borrowing funds to invest in higher-yielding assets, with profits intended to purchase additional Bitcoin. Metaplanet currently faces restrictions on issuing new shares because its market valuation of $2.1 billion remains lower than the value of its Bitcoin holdings. Consequently, the company is relying on loans, bonds, and preferred shares to finance growth.
To improve its financial standing, Metaplanet is seeking a credit rating. In the third quarter, the company demonstrated liquidity by selling a portion of its Bitcoin holdings to cover debt obligations before repurchasing a net 1,000 BTC. The company notes that borrowing against its Bitcoin-backed credit facility remains limited to approximately 10% of the total value of its coins.
