Metaplanet, a Japanese firm listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, reported a net increase of 1,000 BTC in the third quarter of 2026. This move solidified its position as the second-largest corporate holder of bitcoin globally, with a total of 44,000 coins currently on its balance sheet.
During the third quarter, the company sold 10,000 BTC for approximately $789.2 million. Subsequently, it repurchased 11,000 BTC for $948.7 million at an average price of $86,246 per coin. The firm stated that the sale was conducted to demonstrate liquidity to investors.
The management explained that the transaction proved the group's ability to convert bitcoin into cash exceeding its outstanding bonds, borrowings, and interest-bearing liabilities. This strategy aims to strengthen confidence in the company's creditworthiness and improve access to future financing.
Metaplanet shifted its focus from its original hotel and technology operations to bitcoin accumulation in 2024. Following the recent transactions, the company's total bitcoin holdings are valued at approximately $3.7 billion based on current market prices.
