MetaMask Staking is shutting down its Ethereum validators within the Lido protocol. The decision follows a security incident, as announced on the Lido research forum.
MetaMask acts as both a node operator and a staking interface provider. While it runs validators, it also enables users to stake ETH through Lido to receive stETH tokens.
The validator exit process is not instantaneous and typically requires between 15 and 45 days to complete. This timeframe allows the protocol to manage fund transfers securely.
There have been no reports of direct impact on stETH holders. Similar precautionary measures were previously taken by other operators, such as Kiln in September 2025 following infrastructure compromises.
In July 2023, ConsenSys, the parent company of MetaMask, previously initiated exits for 125 validators due to a communication error, though no user funds were lost.
