Images leaked from HorizonOS firmware files reveal the design of Meta's upcoming Project Phoenix headset. The device features a slim, glasses-like frame that is significantly smaller than the Quest 3. It supports prescription lenses and utilizes a design that lacks a bulky facial interface, opting for a traditional eyewear-style fit.
To achieve its lightweight form factor, Project Phoenix uses an external computing and battery module connected via a cable. Reports suggest the device will weigh less than 110 grams, which is approximately one-fifth the weight of the Quest 3. This design shift aims to reduce user fatigue during extended use.
The headset relies on eye and hand tracking for interaction, with no mention of traditional VR controllers in the leaked setup guides. It is expected to feature high-resolution Micro-OLED displays paired with pancake optics. Meta's technical lead Andrew Bosworth previously confirmed the company is developing several next-generation XR projects.
Meta has not officially commented on the leaks. The company is scheduled to host the Meta Connect 2026 conference from September 23 to 24, where it is expected to unveil further details regarding the hardware specifications and market launch plans for the Project Phoenix initiative.
