Joel Kaplan, the Chief Global Affairs Officer at Meta, has announced his departure from the company. He has served at the organization for over 15 years, having joined in 2011 when the company operated as Facebook.
Kaplan plans to remain in his position through the US midterm elections scheduled for November 3, 2026. His official exit is expected to take place in 2027. He cited personal reasons for his decision, noting a desire to spend more time with his family.
Following his departure, Dina Powell McCormick will assume responsibility for external affairs. McCormick currently holds the roles of president and vice chairman at Meta. Additional policy-related duties will be distributed among other executives, including Chief Legal Officer C.J. Mahoney.
Kaplan, a former deputy chief of staff for policy under President George W. Bush, was promoted to his current role in January 2025. During his tenure as Chief Global Affairs Officer, he oversaw adjustments to Meta's policies regarding fact-checking and diversity initiatives.
